OMODA 9 Long-Term Review: 6 Months of Real-World Driving

What is the OMODA 9 really like after six months of everyday driving?

When Carwow content producer Tommy Allen received his OMODA 9 in December 2025, the Chinese plug-in hybrid SUV made a strong first impression. Its premium-looking interior, extensive standard equipment and powerful hybrid system appeared to offer a lot for its approximately £45,000 price tag.

However, living with a car every day is very different from taking it for a short test drive.

After six months and thousands of miles, Tommy had discovered plenty to like about the OMODA 9, but also several features that frustrated him. From its impressive acceleration and real-world fuel economy to its driver assistance technology and touchscreen controls, his long-term review provides a more detailed picture of what ownership can be like.

1. OMODA 9 Interior: Premium Comfort Without the Premium Price?

One of Tommy's biggest first impressions was the OMODA 9's interior quality.

The cabin features soft-touch surfaces, metallic-finish switchgear and a range of comfort features designed to make everyday journeys more enjoyable.

His UK-market Noble test vehicle came equipped with heated and ventilated front and rear seats, a panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera system and automatic parking assistance.

Tommy particularly appreciated the material quality and the solid feel of the controls. At approximately £45,000, he felt the interior could compete with more expensive European SUVs, including models from Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

The 14-speaker Sony sound system was another highlight. After spending thousands of miles in the car, he continued to praise its sound quality, particularly the clear mid-range and strong bass.

The surround-view camera system also proved useful in everyday driving. Given the OMODA 9's relatively large body and limited rear visibility, its clear camera images made parking and manoeuvring easier.

These are the kinds of features that can make a difference long after the excitement of buying a new car has worn off.

2. OMODA 9 Plug-in Hybrid Performance: 449 HP and Impressive Acceleration

The OMODA 9 SHS-P is not just a comfortable family SUV. Its plug-in hybrid powertrain also delivers impressive performance.

The UK-market version tested by Tommy produces a combined output of approximately 449 hp, giving the large SUV plenty of power for motorway driving and overtaking.

During a quarter-mile acceleration event involving Carwow's long-term fleet, the OMODA 9 recorded a time of 13.7 seconds.

For a spacious family SUV, that's a seriously impressive result.

Tommy also appreciated how smoothly the hybrid system delivered its power. The combination of petrol and electric power made acceleration feel effortless, particularly when joining faster-moving traffic.

The OMODA 9 also offers an official electric-only driving range of up to approximately 93 miles under the applicable test cycle, making it an interesting option for drivers who want the flexibility of plug-in hybrid technology.

3. OMODA 9 Real-World Fuel Economy: What If You Cannot Charge at Home?

One of the most interesting details from Tommy's six-month OMODA 9 review was his charging situation.

Unlike many plug-in hybrid owners, he did not have access to home charging.

This meant he couldn't regularly recharge the battery overnight, which is usually one of the biggest advantages of owning a PHEV.

Despite this, Tommy recorded average fuel economy of approximately 40 mpg during his time with the vehicle.

For a large SUV producing close to 450 hp, he considered this a reasonable result.

Of course, real-world fuel economy depends on driving habits, road conditions, battery charge levels and how frequently the vehicle is plugged in. Tommy's result should therefore be treated as an individual long-term test figure rather than a guaranteed figure for every owner.

Still, his experience highlights an interesting advantage of the OMODA 9 SHS-P: it can continue to operate as a hybrid vehicle even when regular external charging isn't available.

For drivers without a home charging point, this flexibility could be an important consideration.

4. OMODA 9 Driver Assistance: Why Tommy Stopped Using Steering Assistance

Not every feature impressed Tommy.

One of his biggest frustrations involved the OMODA 9's lane-related steering assistance.

The system occasionally appeared to misinterpret road markings and attempted to steer the vehicle along a line that did not match his intended direction.

When Tommy tried to correct the steering, he sometimes felt resistance from the system, making it seem as though the vehicle was fighting against his input.

Eventually, he stopped using the steering assistance function because he never felt completely confident in it.

This is an important distinction: he did not abandon all cruise control functions.

The OMODA 9 allows drivers to switch to a more conventional adaptive cruise control mode using the steering wheel controls. This maintains the selected speed and following distance without the vehicle actively intervening in steering.

For Tommy, this provided a more comfortable alternative during longer journeys.

His experience highlights a broader issue with modern driver assistance technology. Adding more automation does not automatically make driving easier. Systems need to respond naturally and predictably, especially when drivers need to take control.

5. OMODA 9 Infotainment System: Too Many Steps for Simple Tasks

Another issue Tommy encountered during everyday use was the infotainment system.

Although the OMODA 9 comes with a large touchscreen and a wide range of digital functions, some frequently used controls are buried within multiple menus.

For example, activating the heated seats can require several touchscreen inputs.

Another Carwow editor demonstrated that the process could take five taps, without counting accidental inputs.

Voice commands provide an alternative, but Tommy found it inconvenient when using them interrupted the music playing in the cabin.

The touchscreen could also feel slow to respond at times.

These problems may seem minor during a short showroom visit, but they become more noticeable when repeated every day.

A heated seat function should be simple to access, especially in a vehicle that places such a strong emphasis on comfort.

For the OMODA 9, improving the infotainment interface and making frequently used controls easier to reach would make the everyday experience more intuitive.

6. Ride Comfort and Handling: Powerful, But Not Perfect

The OMODA 9's powerful hybrid system was one of Tommy's favourite features, but its driving dynamics were less convincing.

On straight roads, the SUV delivered smooth and strong acceleration. However, on uneven surfaces and through corners, he found the suspension could feel unsettled.

The vehicle sometimes felt floaty over road undulations, while the steering lacked the feedback he wanted.

The driver attention monitoring system also became irritating during everyday driving. Briefly looking away from the road could trigger alerts, occasionally adding unnecessary distractions.

These observations reflect Tommy's experience with his particular test vehicle. They are not proof that every OMODA 9 will behave identically.

Nevertheless, they highlight an important difference between having plenty of technology and making sure that technology works naturally in everyday driving.

7. Is the OMODA 9 Worth Buying After Six Months?

After six months of driving, Tommy still believed the OMODA 9 deserved a place on a potential buyer's shortlist.

Its strengths were clear:

  • A premium-feeling interior with extensive standard equipment

  • Heated and ventilated front and rear seats

  • A 14-speaker Sony sound system

  • Strong 449 hp plug-in hybrid performance

  • Impressive quarter-mile acceleration

  • Useful surround-view cameras and automatic parking assistance

  • Flexible hybrid driving, even without regular home charging

However, he also identified several areas for improvement:

  • Steering assistance that did not always feel predictable

  • An infotainment system with some confusing menu layouts

  • Suspension behaviour that could feel unsettled on uneven roads

  • Driver monitoring alerts that could become distracting

Tommy's final verdict was positive, but not without reservations. He considered the OMODA 9 well worth shortlisting, particularly because of its combination of performance, equipment and competitive UK pricing.

He also acknowledged that some established European alternatives offered a more refined driving experience.

For buyers who prioritise comfort, interior features, space and hybrid performance over sporty handling, the OMODA 9 remains an interesting alternative.

Final Thoughts: A Car That Impresses More Than It Perfects

The OMODA 9 makes a strong case for itself with its extensive equipment, powerful plug-in hybrid system and premium-looking cabin.

Tommy Allen's six-month experience shows why the vehicle can appeal to buyers looking for more features and performance without moving into a significantly more expensive SUV category.

At the same time, his feedback reminds us that real-world ownership is about more than impressive specifications.

Touchscreen response times, driver assistance behaviour, steering feel and suspension comfort all matter when a car becomes part of everyday life.

The OMODA 9 may not get everything right, but after thousands of miles, Tommy still considered it worth recommending to potential buyers.

Its biggest strength is the amount it offers for the money. Its biggest challenge is making every part of the driving experience feel as polished as its equipment list.
